I started One Happy Leaf because I wanted to prove that sustainability with fashion could be the norm, not the exception. I also wanted to lead a business that could be a source of good in the world. I had a vision, that together with the right people, we could create a greener world by rehabilitating lands and providing ecologically balanced forests.
Two years ago, I announced that I was going to plant a tree for every order sold through One Happy Leaf. I am proud to say that, because of you, 10,119 trees have been planted in the world. The trees have been planted in various areas across the world that needed either rehabilitation or the creation of 'forest gardens'. The forest gardens are areas with specific varieties of crops and trees that are planted in phases over a four-year period. The trees revitalise dry arid soil providing local families with wood, food and fodder for livestock, as well as supplying oxygen to the atmosphere.
I am committed to creating an environmental legacy that is bigger than One Happy Leaf, something I hope will last decades into the future. And while the number of trees planted thus far is a drop in the ocean compared to what I would like to see (our mission is to plant 1 million trees by 2023), I am thrilled that we are making progress and many lives are being changed for the better.
As the quote by Anna Lappe goes; "Every time you spend money, you are casting a vote for the kind of world you want." Even if you are buying from a store other than One Happy Leaf, ask them, "how is this business going to help the world?", because with the right people and businesses, together we can make the world better and greener than yesterday.
